MECI Girls' Choir Wows at Palestine Choral Festival
October 1, 2013
The newly formed Girls’ Choir from MECI were the youngest children to perform at the 2013 inaugural Palestine Choral Festival, which represented 33 regional and international choirs. The Girls’ Choir was created in October 2012 by Barenboim Said Conservatory’s music program at MECI.
The girls performed with confidence in their musical abilities, singing along far more experienced choirs from around the world: Northern Spirit (Germany), The Australian Voices (Australia), Choeur Régional du Nord-Pas-de-Calais (France) and the Choir of London and Orchestra (UK).
The 25 members of MECI’s Girls’ Choir have been practicing in their small, remote village every week for two hours under the direction of Diego Alamar, a Spanish conductor and composer for the Barenboim Said Music Conservatory in Ramallah. The girls can now perform in three languages: Arabic, English, and Italian. Never before has any such musical accomplishment been achieved in the municipality of 6,000 inhabitants. Only six years ago these children were suffering from low self-esteem and their families saw little future. Music has lifted the spirit of performers and villagers alike, provided unique exposure to international culture, and opened new horizons for the children and their families. This is MECI inspiring hope through music education.
