STORIES OF HOPE

Everyday, a new story of hope emerges from The Middle East Children’s Institute, adding a reason to many others, that keep us going with our mission.⁣

Ru'a

— Ru’a’s Story of Hope

Ru’a started attending MECI’s afterschool program at the age of 7 and proved herself to be a brilliant student. After graduating, MECI supported her to pursue her dream with a medical scholarship.

Ru’a says: “The greatest motivation I have is keeping MECI proud, believing in me is what keeps me going forward. It’s not just about the financial support, it’s about having MECI by my side throughout this long journey!” She is currently pursuing her fourth year of medical studies in Al-Quds University with excellence.

Ru’a has given back to MECI and its beneficiaries in many ways: developing a health curriculum, volunteering and teaching in MECI’s summer peace camp. She is a role model and inspiration to all.

Diaa

— Diaa’s Story of Hope

Four years ago, 15-year old Diaa left school to support his family. His father having been permanently injured, Diaa was forced to work by dragging carts in the Baqa’a Market. Discovering the UNICEF-MECI Hitteen Secondary Comprehensive School for Boys Centre allowed Diaa to continue his studies while still working. He is a dedicated student: committed to classes, always ready to learn. He said that the center gave him a place of belonging.
Diaa hopes to graduate from the program and attend a vocational training center so he can later find a job and work with dignity.

Mariah

— Mariah’s Story of Hope

Born in Iraq, fleeing to Syria and then to Jordan, Mariah spent her childhood escaping conflict. In fact, Mariah was unable to attend school after first grade. She was 17 years old and couldn’t read or write when she joined the MECI-UNICEF Non-Formal Education program. It wasn’t clear whether she’d ever be able to catch up but she put her heart and mind into learning and she achieved success. Mariah is now completing the program and is hoping to enroll in a vocational training program.
She wants to achieve her lifelong dream of becoming a designer.

Qais

— Qais’ Story of Hope

The youngest of four children, 7-year old Qais suffered from behavioral and educational difficulties. It took continuous and coordinated support from MECI’s teachers and counselors to help Qais overcome his challenges. He still has a long way to go but now, he can wash his hands, tie his shoes, write his name and associate letters with animals and objects. In MECI’s safe and positive environment, Qais feels safe to open up, greet his friends and actively engage in classroom activities.
